Well... our baseboard vents (backflow preventers) looked more like this:

and they didn't go into the vent, just screwed into the wall. Our old house had paint on odd sized vents and we were able to use this trick: www.clean-rite.com/purplepower_industrial_strength_cleaner_degreaser.html to remove the paint and get them back to like new condition. Finally... our baseboard vents (non-returns) looked more like this: www.menards.com/main/heating-cooling/registers/24-baseboard-diffuser/p-138325-c-6879.htm and they didn't go into the vent, just screwed into the wall. ETA: As for the purple power, what we did was spray it (outside on the driveway...not inside), let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then blow it with a garden hose pressure nozzle. (I think that's the industry term, anyway).
